We’re the U.S. chapter of the international organization that defined RRM.
The Institute for Restorative Reproductive Medicine United States (IRRMUS) is a 501(c)(3) organization that represents Restorative Reproductive Medicine (RRM) in the United States. Its mission is advancing research, education, and public health regarding RRM.
Members of IRRMUS include healthcare professionals, allied healthcare professionals, medical students & residents, organizations, and community members who are interested in advancing Restorative Reproductive Medicine.
IRRMUS is a chapter of the International Institute for Restorative Reproductive Medicine (IIRRM) and members are a part of both organizations by joining IRRMUS. The IIRRM was founded in 2000 and is the professional medical society that defined RRM.
What is Restorative Reproductive Medicine?
Restorative reproductive medicine (RRM) is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on identifying the underlying health conditions that contribute to reproductive dysfunction and suboptimal reproductive health, treating them to restore the natural functions of the reproductive system.
Unlike conventional approaches that use treatments that suppress normal physiology to deal with dysfunction, RRM seeks to work with the body, treating reproductive abnormalities not by bypassing the body’s processes, but by diagnosing, understanding, and addressing underlying health concerns. This approach improves overall wellness and restores fertility.
1. Fertility Charting and Tracking
RRM begins with observing and charting the menstrual cycle, paying attention to patterns in mucus production, hormone patterns, bleeding, and other cycle characteristics. This tracking reveals patterns that can help identify potential reproductive conditions and issues of concern. This information can also be used to guide timing of interventions and medications, as well as empower the couple to know optimal times for intercourse. Changes in cycle tracking act as a form of biofeedback to assess efficacy of treatments.
2. Male Factor
Restorative andrology is a branch of RRM focusing on the reproductive health concerns of men, recognizing that new research has identified that abnormal semen analysis is not only associated with difficulty getting pregnant but with long term health issues, leading to poorer quality of life and earlier mortality. The goal of RRM treatment for men is the same: identify and treat underlying abnormalities, restoring health and improving reproductive function and fertility.
How Does RRM Work?
3. Diagnosis and Testing
RRM practitioners conduct specific medical tests, like ultrasounds and blood tests, to confirm observations in the cycle charting. Screening for conditions like polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS, previously PCOS), thyroid dysfunction, and endometriosis is common to identify underlying health concerns that may impact fertility.
4. Personalized Treatment Plans
RRM uses a multi-factorial and often multi-disciplinary approach. Treatment plans are tailored to the individual or couple, aiming to restore normal hormonal functions and correct any abnormalities found. Treatments for example may include personalized hormone therapies, ovulation induction, luteal phase normalization, other medications, supplements, surgery and lifestyle adjustments. RRM team members may include cycle charting educators, nurses, navigators, dietician and nutritional experts, activity, sleep, lifestyle coaches and others.
